Danish Gaming Enforcement Cracks Down on 79 Unregulated Online Casinos

In an important victory for Denmark’s ongoing battle against unlicensed gambling platforms, the Gambling Authority (DGA), Spillemyndigheden, was granted the authority to block a total of 79 illegal gambling websites at the end of August.

The websites that were recently blocked included online casinos, sports betting platforms, and skin betting sites that specifically targeted Danish citizens, including minors. This latest crackdown brings the total number of blocked websites in 2024 to 162, marking the highest number in a single year since the DGA began its efforts to combat illegal gambling in 2012. Overall, the DGA has now blocked 438 websites in total.

One of the primary reasons behind the DGA’s actions is to protect young users from the harmful effects of unregulated gambling. By shutting down websites that promote skin betting – a form of gambling where players use virtual currency from games like Roblox to place bets – the regulator aims to safeguard minors from exposure to such activities.

Anders Dorph, head of the DGA, underscored the potential risks associated with these illegal sites, particularly for young individuals: “We pay particular attention to this new type of site. Roblox is a game that is very popular among children and young people under the age of 18. Our children should not be introduced to gambling when they play video games, so I am very pleased that we have blocked access to these sites.”

In addition to blocking unauthorized gambling websites, the DGA has taken steps to educate players about the risks of using illegal platforms. When users attempt to access these blocked sites, they are redirected to a warning page informing them that the site is not in compliance with regulations and lacks the safety measures provided by licensed operators. Dorph emphasized the importance of clear and easily accessible warnings, as some users may attempt to bypass the blocks.

Furthermore, the recent wave of blocks saw the involvement of three telecom companies that are not part of the Teleindustrien trade group. Their participation expands the reach of the DGA’s efforts, ensuring that a greater number of Danish users are shielded from unlawful gambling websites.

Overall, these actions mark a significant step forward in Denmark’s fight against illegal gambling operations, with regulators maintaining a strong stance on protecting vulnerable individuals from the potential harms associated with unlicensed gambling.
